Students of High School of Mathematics "Acad. Kiril Popov " were acquainted with the methods of Earth Observation

The Space Research and Technology Institute of BAS (SRTI-BAS) and the Plovdiv High School of Mathematics “Acad. Kiril Popov” held the 4th school EEOBSS.

Department of “Remote sensing and GIS”, SRTI-BAS and HSM “Acad. Kiril Popov “, Plovdiv organized a joint 4th school EEOBSS. It was held from 28th to 30th of November 2018 in the school premises. Students from the 9th to 12th grade, who participated in the training, were acquainted with the methods of Earth Observation.

The first day of the program began with an introduction to Remote Sensing. Lecturer was Prof. DST Garo Mardirossian. The students explored the different satellite orbits as well as the satellites used to monitor our planet – Earth.

The next day from EEOBSS School, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lachezar Filchev, Ph.D. through a presentation acquainted the audience with the resolution of the satellite imagery and the basic principles of “Visual interpretation of satellite images” and “Image processing”. After a short break the students went to a practical activity in one of the computer laboratories of the School. They examined satellite imagery and satellite imaging metadata using the LEOWorks program developed by ESA.

The last day passed with a theoretical presentation of GPS and GNSS systems, as well as the application of InSAR method in geophysics and seismology. Their basic principles and their practical application were presented by Prof. DST Dimitar Dimitrov through a presentation. The day ended with the completion of a questionnaire and awarding of certificates to all involved in the training. The training enabled a closer look at the application of modern space technologies in physics and geography. The lectures were extremely interesting and presented in an accessible way to the students.
